Understanding the Life Cycle of a Pimple and How to Get Rid of it Fast

Have you ever woke up one day to only find a tiny, red dot on the center of your forehead? Unless you’re some kind of god or goddess who has perfect skin, we all have experienced acne or a pimple at some point in our lives.

Pimples are a normal skin condition and are developed when sebaceous glands, also known as oil glands become clogged and infected with bacteria which cause swollen, red lesions filled with pus to form. Excess sebum secretion by the oil glands is the primary cause behind this problem.

So what causes excess oil in the first place?

  • Stress- This includes both emotional and physical stress. Stress can increase the oil production in your skin and promote inflammation. Try not to go to bed stressed out; meditation, yoga and calming music before bed may help prevent morning breakouts.

  • Menstrual Cycle- For females this is the obvious reason. Every month a woman's body is going through a regular cycle of hormone production, and as those hormones wax and wane, they can stimulate the oil glands.

  • Sweat- The act of sweating is not entirely a bad thing; as it can remove impurities from your skin and help protect against bacteria. However, if you let sweat sit on your skin for any prolonged length of time it can be a problem! Sweat can build up unwanted bacteria in your pores and what’s on your face, and if it settles back into your skin – not only breakouts but milia and rashes can become a result.

  • Diet- We all know that diet plays a huge role in our everyday lives, when we consume good foods we see positive benefits, but if we eat bad, there’s always consequences.

  • Lack of Sleep- Sleep is food for your brain, body and skin, and if we don’t get enough, it affects the moisture levels in your skin, decreasing them and lowering your complexion’s pH levels. So next time you decide to stay up and finish the last few episodes of Grey’s on Netflix passed your bedtime, think again!

  • Touching Your Face- Believe it or not, touching your face is one of the factors of breakouts. Because bacteria, viruses and allergens transfer from fingertips onto the skin, rubbing repeatedly onto the skin can do some real damage. If you do plan on touching anything, consider washing your hands first.

  • Cosmetic Products- Like many women, we use makeup to cover up our spots or blemishes, unfortunately because makeup also covers your pores, you can easily clog them and stop the flow of sebum, resulting in either excessively dry skin or oily skin.

When removing makeup or other debris, use proper cleansers specifically designed for oily or acne-prone skin. Using natural products like honey can also work as well.

The causes of excess oils are endless; but now that we understand the root of the problem and why it may be happening, we can now focus on how to get rid of that pesky pimple and how to prevent it from happening. Here are quick tips on how to get rid of acne or pimples fast:

  • Ice- Ice is highly desired for those with pimples accompanied with pain because it offers an instant soothing effect. Wrap ice with a towel to prevent irritation. Place on top of pimple for no more than five minutes. Repeat steps every 15-30 minutes if you’re not satisfied with the results.

  • Vitamin C- Lemon juice is rich in vitamin C and can easily help the pimples to dry up faster. Dip a clean cotton swab in fresh lemon juice and apply it to the pimples before going to bed.

  • Toothpaste- Toothpaste is not only great use for teeth but can also be used to treat pimples quickly. It is most effective when used following the ice remedy. Make sure you use white toothpaste, as gel based toothpaste will not have the same effect.

  • Steam- Steam will open your pores and allow your skin to breathe. This will allow it to get rid of oils, dirt and bacteria trapped in the pores that can cause infection or inflammation.

  • Garlic- Garlic is an antiviral, antifungal, antiseptic and antioxidant agent that is a fast treatment for pimples. Heck, garlic helps to purify your blood so eating one clove a day won’t hurt! Cut a fresh garlic clove into two pieces and rub it on the pimples for five minutes before washing your skin. Repeat the treatment several times a day.

Pimples can be irritating; but if we properly take care of our bodies with exercise, clean diets, good sleep and shower regularly, we can help to prevent those pimples from appearing!
