Home Remedies for Dry and Damaged Hair

Home Remedies for Dry and Damaged Hair

Hair that lacks the ability to retain moisture simply cannot maintain its natural shine, texture, and smoothness.

Hair damage primarily occurs due to losing its natural oils which are typically brought about by sunbathing, swimming in a heavily chlorinated water, over-reliance on hair dryers and other hair styling products. People with naturally dry skin also find themselves dealing with hair damage.

What you need to do before anything else is take care of hair problems like dandruff, split ends, dry hair, hair fall and itchiness in the scalp.

Soothe your dry and frizzy strands with these natural remedies instead of blowing away hundreds of dollars on hair treatments that only yield temporary results and often do more damage than anything else.

Reverse Damage with Avocados

Take a ripe avocado with the pit removed and mash it. Now mix it with an egg and apply the mix on wet hair. Avocados are rich in vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids that can restore the natural shine of your hair. Leave the mix on for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. To repair damaged hair, use this remedy once a week and to maintain your hair’s healthy luster, use it at least once a month.

Treat Hair with Botanical Oils

Using botanical oils on your hair is an excellent remedy for restoring natural shine and texture. You can easily find oils like tea tree oil, jojoba oil, olive oil and sweet almond oil at any health food store near you. For thick and voluminous hair, coconut oil works best. Apply each oil at a time on wet hair and massage your hair and scalp using circular motions. Wrap your hair with a shower cap or warm towel and leave it on for at least 30 minutes.  Wash thoroughly with a natural shampoo, which contains tea tree oil or argon oil, as the active ingredients in those oils further, boosts the health of your hair.

Massage in Butter

For brittle-free hair, use a small amount of butter at least once a week. Apply it directly on dry hair and massage. Put on a shower cap and leave it on for 30 minutes. Butter is great for treating dry hair and giving it a glossy shine.

Rinse with Tea

Tea is not only a great remedy for a sore throat but also works well to treat dry and damaged hair. Use a quarter cup of freshly brewed warm tea to rinse your hair right after shampooing. Tea is ideal for restoring luster and protecting the color of your hair. Therefore, make sure to choose the right tea according to your hair color. For example, use chamomile tea for blonde hair and black tea for black or dark-colored hair.

Apple Cider Vinegar Mask

You will notice instants improvements in your damaged or dry hair after using this mask for the very first time. Mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and three egg whites. Dampen your hair and apply the mixture. Cover your head with a shower cap and rinse thoroughly after 30 minutes.

Eggs

Treat your damaged hair with eggs; egg yolk works as a natural moisturizer and conditioner for dry hair. You can mix eggs with certain oils depending on the kind of results desired.

Mix 2 tablespoons of coconut or olive oil with 3 whole eggs and stir well. Include one tablespoon of honey in the mixture and a few drops of lemon juice. Mix well and apply on dry hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water. This happens to be an excellent remedy for frizz-free and glossy hair.

Yogurt also works wonderfully when mixed with eggs. Mix half a cup of full-fat yogurt with two eggs and add some almond oil. Mix the ingredients well until the mixture turns creamy. Apply thoroughly and cover your hair with a hot towel. Give it a nice rinse after 30 minutes.

Bananas

Bananas not only taste great but can also be used to treat dull, dry and damaged hair owing to its rich the vitamins, antioxidants, and potassium content. Mash two bananas and add one tablespoon each of coconut oil, olive oil and honey in the mixture. Apply the paste on wet hair and rinse with a natural shampoo after 15 minutes.

Preventive Measures

After you step out of the shower, don't dry off wet hair by rubbing them with a towel. Instead, keep them covered with a cotton towel for a few minutes which naturally absorbs water and dampness. It's a great hack to prevent hair fall and split ends, which are two major causes of hair damage.

Your home heating system drains moisture from the air, which can dry out your hair prematurely. Restoring the moisture in the air by using a humidifier at night can help your hair stay moisturized.

If you usually wear your hair in a ponytail, undo it for a few hours a day to give your hair a break. Also, try not to pull your hair back too tightly. Avoid sleeping while leaving any sort of accessories in your hair.
